Life of Pi: A Novel

The international bestseller and modern classic of adventure, survival, and the power of storytelling is now an award-winning play.

"A story to make you believe in the soul-sustaining power of fiction."—Los Angeles Times Book Review

After the sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan—and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger.

Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi Patel, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with the tiger, Richard Parker, for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again.

The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional—but is it more true?

Life of Pi is at once a realistic, rousing adventure and a meta-tale of survival that explores the redemptive power of storytelling and the transformative nature of fiction. It's a story, as one character puts it, to make you believe in God.

A beautiful tale of sorrow, survival, and cunning. "A profound exploration of ageless themes: faith and truth, fact and fiction, man versus nature, and innocence and experience".

What would you do if you ended up on a lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal tiger? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have fared as well as the protagonist of this unusual novel!

I typically prefer to read science-fiction and fantasy because I like stories about things that aren't likely to happen in our limited universe, but this story certainly falls in the category of "not likely to happen' to most of us! A few scenes were a bit too graphic for my delicate sensibilities, but overall the story is told in a way that evokes the horror of the situation without painting too gruesome of a picture.

The scene that takes place after Pi lands in the lifeboat and before Richard Parker gets on the lifeboat is a brilliant piece of storytelling that would be entirely lost in a movie version, unless the movie is able to hide a key piece of information about Richard Parker until the right moment.

I listened to the Audible version, which I highly recommend because the story needs to be told in an Indian accent!

Hmmm...I almost put this book down and didn't read it. It is extremely slow and boring for the first 100 pages - "Before Tiger". I didn't like the authors over use of commas and creating huge paragraphs with one long sentence with commas in between every 3rd word. I didn't believe the philosophical musings of Pi during his time in the lifeboat. I couldn't accept a 16yr old thinking and talking the way he did. It was a semi-engaging read but could have put it down at any time and not finished it. I learned that tolerance is the key to godliness. A much better read is "Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea" - true story.

It was too weird for me. Too far fetched...like I believe half of those paranormal books I read...lol.

The author or character really likes lists of things. But I found as the sanity decreased and food became scarce, the lists changed tune as well. I had decided to read this book after only reading the spark notes for it years ago for school. This story is an interesting one and the end definitely has you questioning certain details. It was a fun read but I’m not sure why it was a required book at my old high school. I don’t think it should be with some details in there.
