I could not finish this selection. I only made it to chapter 15, and that is with continuously forcing myself to pick it back up. I just could not get behind the story. Initially it showed promise and I thought I would like it. But once the first chapter was finished I really struggled to like it and even more struggles to convince myself to keep reading. Easily put down, much more difficult to pick back up. Sometimes when I struggle with a book, if I read something else and come back to it, that helps, not so with this one. There comes a point when you just have to decide that it's not worth it to keep it hanging around any longer than necessary and move on to something that would be pleasurable to read.

I like descriptive writing as much as the next reader, but I wasn't fond of the graphic (senseless) detail of the hyena's eating habits, the slaughter of various animals, and the defecation (and consumption of the voided matter), which comprised the majority of the book.
I thought the author was so transfixed on the religious message that he completely abandoned the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker.
The ending was a horrific cop-out - Richard Parker runs off into the woods never to be seen again. Seriously?!

Three words to describe this book- gross, long-winded, and disappointing. To all my friends who told me how much they loved this book, I'm sorry but I just don't get it. This book was just Pi's explanations of certain subjects over and over. I even ended up hating him a little. There were confusing tie-ins and I don't even know how to feel about the ending. I was expecting great things from this book, especially since it is so well known. I was even a bit sad because I have heard so many great things about this book, and I feel like I’m really missing something. So if anyone can tell me what that may be I would appreciate it. Sorry Martel but I don’t think I will be reading anything else by you.
