Author of the "Loveboat, Taipei" series. In this new novel, Tan and Winter's after-prom kiss sparks the question of "what if." However, Tan's lingering love for his ex-girlfriend casts a shadow over their budding romance even before it could bloom. Further complicating matters, Tan's ex-girlfriend unexpectedly reappears at his doorstep, claiming to have escaped an abusive relationship and seeking his help. Her sudden presence and constant interference from her parents add tension to Tan and Winter's relationship. Overall, this novel can be classified as an easy thriller rather than a nail-biting one. The characters are well-developed, with Tan's knack for writing and cracking codes and Winter's calm and caring nature playing pivotal roles in the story. Rebecca, Tan's ex-girlfriend, comes across as privileged and slow to understand the consequences of her actions. While Rebecca's character development is gradual, it does occur. Tan consistently makes the right choices, but Winter emerges as the true hero, saving the day with her quiet strength and unwavering concern for others. This easy-to-read novel keeps readers engaged and eager to discover what happens in the next chapter. So you may ask, why three stars instead of four? The lack of complexity and depth were my reasonings. It could have been better. Better suited for middle-grade readers instead of young adults. The storyline might be too easy for the YA audience.
