John Adams

By David McCullough

The Pulitzer Prize–winning, bestselling biography of America’s founding father and second president that was the basis for the acclaimed HBO series, brilliantly told by master historian David McCullough.

In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as “out of his senses”; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the moving love stories in American history.

This is history on a grand scale—a book about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, John Adams is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

One of my fondest wishes has always been to travel through time and place to be present in particular periods of human history. The closest I can come to making that wish come true (at least at this phase of my existence) is to read well-written historical books.

The more David McCullough I read, the more I realize that he's one of my all around favorite authors. He writes about history and people so that average folks like me can really get a feel for a time, a place, and historical figures.

Through this book, I learn about our government and its beginnings, being a participating citizen in the governing process and how to be a clear and loving communicator. John Adams and his good wife Abigail are historical figures of great caliber and intelligence. I'm a better person for the reading of this book.

I love this book, the author, and the subjects John Adams and his wife Abigail. It might have benefited from a little editing for greater brevity but otherwise a perfect book. My favorite parts were all the beautiful quotes about morality from Adam's personal journals.
