1776

America’s beloved and distinguished historian presents, in a book of breathtaking excitement, drama, and narrative force, the stirring story of the year of our nation’s birth, 1776, interweaving, on both sides of the Atlantic, the actions and decisions that led Great Britain to undertake a war against her rebellious colonial subjects and that placed America’s survival in the hands of George Washington.

Well-done for its documentation of the early years of American Revolutionary War. I listened to this on audio. The information covered both sides of the conflict, and the motivations and actions behind the military leadership, the fledgling new country’s politicians and the Crown. In hearing the story told, it’s a wonder that the Continental army survived, with their many lost skirmishes, deserters and casualties. And reflecting on today’s divided events, maybe one can understand how the loyalists to British rule felt more comfortable in their views, with this uprising that seemed doomed at the outset. It is amazing that America persevered. We have the French to thank for their help, though this certainly wasn’t discussed in 1776. But the early events laid the groundwork for their eventual entry. I had to read this for a DAR chapter bookclub. Very glad I did.
Great book to know how many times we were close to losing the war.
Lacking any real depth or insight, this volume squanders a riveting narrative on hagiographic descriptions and trite platitudes.
mccullough always delivers a cinematic narrative
