I must say right off the bat that I am not training for anything. I'm not even an athlete. I've never even heard of Dave Scott & Mark Allen before reading this book. So why did I read the book? Well, because my husband is training for his first full Ironman in Kona later this year. (He won a coveted lottery spot. :) These 2 men are phenomenal athletes, the best of the best. Allen has won most other world triathlons but never Ironman World Championship. His toughest opponent is 6 time IM world champion Dave Scott. It will come down to quite possibly the greatest showdown in sport history in 1989. Only 58 seconds will separate them at the finish. You will have to read (or Google) to find out the winner! I liked reading the background on each man ( they have very different training styles), the days leading up to the race and race day itself. But I didn't like reading about the other athletes/trainers/exercise scientists. I admit I skimmed sections about the effects of pain & hunger on a body and accelerometers used to collect data on an athlete. I am amazed that people VOLUNTEER to compete in these races. They actually pay $$$$ to compete, train a ridiculous amount of hours and travel to faraway places for "fun!" But I am more in awe that the human body CAN actually swim, bike, and run 140.6 miles!
