Into the Still Blue is the highly anticipated conclusion to the Under the Never Sky trilogy. Being one of MY most anticipated of 2014, I was beside myself when I finally started it. I put it off for some time, because I LOVE this series and I was sad to see it ending. Reviewing a series-ender I think is one of the more difficult reviews to write. You don't want to give away ANYTHING from the previous books and sometimes, expressing all your feels and thoughts-- without spoilers-- is really difficult for me to do. So bear with me, if I spoil something, I apologize now.
I must admit, I was nervous starting Into the Still Blue; for two reasons. One-it has been quite some time since finishing Through the Ever Night. It's always difficult when you have such long periods of time between books in a series and I didn't have the forethought to re read it before starting. Luckily, it wasn't much time before everything started coming back and I was fully engrossed in the book. Rossi did a remarkable job with giving us a nice recap, without taking up too many pages and much time to do so. Two- Through the Ever Night was one of those rare sophomore books that didn't suffer from Middle Book Syndrome. It was heartbreaking and full of non stop action, earning itself one of my all time favorites. How do you follow-up to that? With that being said, I was a little disappointed. I loved the punches Rossi brought. I loved how everything turned out, overall. But. (Yes, the infamous BUT). It wasn't as punch in the gut intense as I was hoping.
What I love most about this series, especially in this installment, is the all too fascinating Aether. Although we still don't get much elaboration on what it IS or why it's there, I just love it. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, I would LOVE to see one of these storms. Call my crazy. I also love that Rossi can write such strong, distinct characters in her books. For me, there aren't two characters that are alike. Since ALL the books are in dual POV with Aria and Perry, we get to see everything, in each perspective and I have always loved that.
Since the storms are getting worse, the race to the Still Blue is even more crucial. I thought the intensity regarding this was one of the strongest aspects of this book. Since Sable and Hess have joined together and now have Cinder, there is a lot at stake for Perry, Aria and the remaining Tides and Dwellers. What fell flat for me was the same situation happening not once, but twice. I felt like it was the same things happening over and over again, until finally, after 3/4 of the book, it WENT somewhere. There was more growth for the characters than the plot moving. But this is probably the biggest thumbs down for me.
Aria has really come a long way since we first met her in Under the Never Sky. I love how she has come into her own, has an amazing leadership quality and is so loving to everyone. Her relationship with Roar is one of my favorites and I enjoy the banter between those two. We don't see as much of this because of Roar's grief *cue heartbreak*, but it's there. Perry too, I felt has come a long way. He is still pretty closed off with everyone but after some pushing from Aria, the communication gets better. I have always been a fan of Aria and Perry. I loved how their relationship developed and although they have spent more time AWAY from each other than together, they are a really strong couple. The times they spent alone were so sweet and heart melting. I just LOVE THESE TWO. I also really appreciated the banter and growth between Soren, Roar, Brooke Aria and Perry. The twist too, regarding Aria and Loran. Although I figured it out pretty early on, it was one of those rare twist that made the story stronger. Thumbs up for that.
My Peeve- There were periods of time when I thought the pacing was slow. Not only that, I was a little peeved that the same thing kept happening over and over again. [spoiler] Um, they got themselves captured twice. WHY.[/spoiler] As I mentioned before, I wasn't as blow away by intensity as I was the previous books. I was hoping for MORE and since conclusions are, in my opinion, suppose to be INTENSE, I didn't feel it. AND. [spoiler] When Sable told everyone that Perry was dead. I didn't believe it, because DUH. So, why? [/spoiler] I also wasn't very... blown away by the events that happened towards the end on the ships. [spoiler] I thought them getting to the Still Blue would have been more... intense (lol) I felt the whole thing was anticlimactic.[/spoiler]
Overall- I loved it. Although it wasn't ALL I was hoping for to the ending of this amazing trilogy, it was still really. really good. It's heartbreaking at times, action packed, heart melting and the ending was perfection . I'm sad this see these end and I can't wait to see what Veronica Rossi brings us next. I highly recommend these books!
