Ink and Bone (The Great Library)
In this exhilarating series, New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine rewrites history, creating a dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time.... Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly--but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden. Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family. Jess has been sent to be his family's spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library's service. When his friend inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe knowledge is more valuable than any human life--and soon both heretics and books will burn....

The concept for this book is amazing, but the storyline is a little bland for my taste, maybe because the bad guys in this book are too similar to the other dytopian books I've read, like Divergent and The Hunger Games. Change is seen as bad and every little hint of it has to be suppressed, hidden from the eyes and minds of the public. And that's not all. The fact that this book takes place in the very near future turned me off. Let's also mention that the very thing that's a threat to the Library is a technology we are quite familiar with: A PRINTER. And lo and behold, such a technology is not present in this book - in the year... 2031, if I got my calculations right (the prologue takes place in 2025). It could have been saved - maybe - if this book turned out to be more fantasy, and the names of real countries weren't used.
The characters are all amazing though. They make me want to root for them. My most favourite has got to be Scholar Wolfe~ But the romance needed some work. It was just... I don't know... quite sudden for me. In retrospect, maybe I didn't think Jess and Morgan matched?
So, yes, there you have it. 3 stars. I am quite proud of myself for finishing a book with a male main char. Sadly, I'm not at all interested in continuing the series.
