Patterson can spin a tale! Here he opens a window into a legacy military family and examines the price of honor and service. Brian is accused of murder, after he has come home from a particularly violent tour in Iraq. The man he killed is his former CO, who happens to be married to Brian's de facto sister. Then the story spins out of control, held together by Patterson's skill alone. Much of this is unimaginable, yet completely believable. It makes our de rigeur greeting for a service member 'thanks for your service' as hollow as I'm sure it feels to the military person receiving it.
