Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before—the immortality, Beecham’s vial—were a figment of her imagination. She doesn’t even know if Jack is alive or dead. All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her.

When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: Hazel has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III. Soon Hazel is pulled into the glamor and romance of a court where everyone has something to hide, especially the enigmatic, brilliant members of a social club known as the Companions to the Death.

As Hazel’s work entangles her more and more with the British court, she realizes that her own future as a surgeon isn't the only thing at stake. Malicious forces are at work in the monarchy, and Hazel may be the only one capable of setting things right.

I think the concept of this book was interesting, however, I found it quite boring + not much happened. I think the historical time period may have been an afterthought or to try to give it some Sweeney Todd vibes but it just fell short for me. I think this would have been a really great story to be written as a horror book to lean into some of the more grotesque themes that were skipped over or lightly touched. I'm not saying it was a horrible book, but I did listen to it at 1.8 speed so it was only 5 hours long but I probably would have dnf'd it had I physically read it. I enjoy some YA but this was unfortunately not it for me.

This was an incredible story that I had to pace myself with so I wouldn't finish it too quickly. Hazel is a bad ass FMC and reading out her journey to become a surgeon. I loved the Frankenstein type feel this book had, a truly great Gothic romance!

I’m pretty squeamish, but have no fear! This book had just few enough gruesome surgery scenes to make them easy to push through and get to the romance and the mystery and the humor. Honestly, though, the surgery was interesting too, if horrifying. I found the romance believable and the whole concept of “resurrection men” fascinating. Would recommend!

I must say, this book drew me in from the very beginning. Anatomy was a much slower start, but it pays off for the immediate entertainment and intrigue that we find in Immortality. The plot never staled, the characters were all interesting and played their parts excellently. I was kept guessing, and even when I thought I had it all solved, Hazel would surprise me with a new decision. Even so, I never felt Hazel sway from her true self and it was enjoyable to see her grow into her role as surgeon.

I highly recommend this, especially if you enjoyed Anatomy.
