But as the drought tightens its grip, Henry's true colors are revealed. Melissa covers her bruises with expensive new makeup and struggles to reconcile her affluent life with that of her starving neighbors. I was raised in a area of Kansas that went thru hard times during the Dust Bowl. This book was set in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. They have gone without rain for months and times are getting hard and harder. The main to characters are sisters, one with a club foot. The story line of the older sister, Melissa, starts out with her marrying into the richest family in town. But it doesn't turn out well! The younger sister, Kathryn, sets out to go to Indianapolis with her father and step mother, to get her foot repaired. This trip doesn't do well but it quite unbelievable and distracted from the story line to me. The book was easy to read and it does finally rain!
