I listened to this book with my daughter, and I was brought to tears several times. I thought that the emotions that were described where very real and believable. I could remember feeling the way that Ida did when I was her age. You feel so powerless about what is happening around you, you only have your own feelings and actions to control. I know that some readers found Ida a brat, but I did not. I thought that the author did a very good job of getting to know who Ida was and how she felt about things - and that she was somewhat of a unique kid - before she had her react the way she did about the horrible changes that came about in her life. Plus, she grows and learns and changes by the close of the book. Isn't that what life is about? Growth, a journey, healing, love. I would recommend this book to adults and other children - probably 10 and up.
