I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “stunning” (America Ferrera) YA novel about a teenager coming to terms with losing her sister and finding herself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home.
“Alive and crackling—a gritty tale wrapped in a page-turner. ”—The New York Times
Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents’ house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family.
But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga’s role.
Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.
But it’s not long before Julia discovers that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend Lorena, and her first love, first everything boyfriend Connor, Julia is determined to find out. Was Olga really what she seemed? Or was there more to her sister’s story? And either way, how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?

Heartwrenching, relatable, beautiful. I wish this book existed when I was a teen! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter addresses teen depression in the most real, rawest way. The story is a relatable coming-of-age tale dealing with finding who you are and what it's like when you have that first "eureka" moment that your parents are also humans dealing with their own baggage.
The protagonist Julia always felt like the black sheep in her conservative family, but even more so after the death of her "perfect" sister. There is an element of mystery surrounding her sister's life comes to a surprising conclusion, and the topics of teen friendship and first love are also touched upon and wonderfully executed. Can't recommend this book enough!

This book was so emotional and beautiful. Definitely needs a CW for depression/anxiety/suicide and quote “adult content” otherwise related. Julia’s journey to learn about her sister was amazing, and in ways I can relate. The discussion of immigration and going back between home culture and school culture is also great.
This was truly a fun read! It tackles all those things we face growing up in a Hispanic family about becoming a woman, what is right/wrong, and what is accepted of you. Until very recently, choosing a life outside of being a mom and homemaker seemed so taboo! Intertwine that with the loss of the main character's older sister, and things get even more complicated. This was a great read!
