One thing I hadn't seemed to realize until recently, is that I like books that feature a "list." Whether it's a bucket list, to-do list, grocery list (Ok, not really), but you get the point. In real life, I am NOT a list maker. If I write myself a list, I'll look at it later on and think defiantly, "you wanna bet?" But I digress.
I could really appreciate Naya for being a successful intellectual, who isn't the smoothest in the "romance" department, i found it to be quirky and endearing. I particularly enjoyed the little tidbits we got about her job. It was such a nice aspect hearing Naya discusses her passion for teaching techniques to engage and inspire students to learn. It's one of those details that I enjoy reading. It's the moments when the main character is so passionate that it makes me wonder if the author has a similar passion that bleeds through into the writing.
Another aspect that I love is that the love interest, Jake is such a "cinnamon roll." If you aren't aware, a "Cinnamon Roll" or "Cinnamon Roll Hero" refers to when the primary love interest is super sweet, like a cinnamon roll. Cinnamon Roll Heroes will spoil the main character and show them nothing but love and respect. Naya and Jake are both so passionate about their jobs and even though, they are in what I call a "Hallmark Situation," they seem to relatively keep their jobs and love life separate, which is always difficult. I call a "Hallmark Situation' the moment in a story, where the two love interests have a professional conflict of interest, think of "You've Got Mail," or almost any cheesy holiday Hallmark movie plotline.
This book is racially unproblematic, sweet, and smart, with a dash of passion. What more can you ask for?

Didn't finish. At 50% on kindle and just couldn't do it. OK, I like sex as much as the next person, but the first half of the book was just that. She is a friggin professor... Hello-o-o! All they talk about is figuring out the timing for the next hook up. Does anyone work? Have no idea really what she does all day. What the heck does he do? There were meager references here and there. Then there were creepy texts from the ex, but who cares... Not a fav. Sounds like other reviewers liked the last third of the book... well I couldn't make it there. This is very rare for me. Count me out. I definitely failed at reading this book and I'm usually a winner.
⭐⭐⭐⭐️ / 4 stars
This was a good read. Easy, flowy writing with funny bits while also addressing more serious subject matter.
Most of the time it read as a rom-com / angsty romance with a little suspense thrown in; especially towards the end.
I love a strong female lead and appreciated the "Phoenix" vibe I got from Naya.
I will absolutely be checking out more work from this author.

Loved it!
Great read to start the year with, especially after not being able to read much in 2020. Can't wait for the author's next book!

I rarely read Romance books but I am glad I found this one. It hit on some real issues and the I devoured the last third of the book because I had to know what happens. It was a good read.
