How To Be A Good Creature: A Memoir in Thirteen Animals

This restorative memoir reflects on the personalities and quirks of thirteen animals—Sy’s friends—and the truths revealed by their grace. It also explores vast themes: the otherness and sameness of people and animals; the various ways we learn to love and become empathetic; how we find our passion; how we create our families; coping with loss and despair; gratitude; forgiveness; and most of all, how to be a good creature in the world.

A nice short read. The animals talked about in the book are separated by chapters, but all of them are connected. Very fluid, easy for slower readers. Incredible and very touching, definitely pulls on some emotions and how the reader relates to animals.

If you know me, you know I’m a memoir person. So, it goes to reason that as soon as I saw Rachel Dawson mention this memoir I wanted to try it. I hate spiders. So much so that I cry just thinking about them. Which is why I’m awestruck as I tell you that I read that whole chapter about spiders and didn’t CRY ONCE!!!!

Anyways, all in all, I loved seeing the way each of the animals enriched Sy’s life! The illustrations added so much! As someone who cries about a dog who died of old age almost a year ago, at least once a week, I definitely felt for the author through the multitude of losses covered in this book.I have plans to read the good good pig very soon!!!
