This book was exquisitely uncomfortable to read. And it should be. It follows seven genrations of descendants from two half sisters in what is now Ghana and illustrates how slavery and racism left their mark. It was beautifully written. It would have been easy for each chapter to have the same voice but it didn't. They were each unique, telling each character's separate but connected story. Wow. A chronicle of slavery, on two continents, but told through the stories of a single family. Separated by time and slavery and politics. And yet as a white person adopted as an infant the core of this resonates with me as a couple of questions. Do we carry parts of our ancestors with us? Are we doomed to repeat choices, good and bad from even completely unknown family history?
