I’m one of those rare folks who hasn’t read the entire Harry Potter series yet. I missed the boat when it came out for a variety of reasons (I was exclusively reading romance novels at that point, I wasn’t allowed to read Harry Potter due to the witchcraft content, and I thought it was just for kids and I didn’t fancy myself one of those anymore when I was in high school), but I did watch nearly all the films in the theatres growing up. Of course, HP is a phenomenon that will define children’s literature for a long while yet so I finally decided I ought to actually experience the series for myself. While I liked books 1 and 2, I think this is the one that made me more interested in the series as it showed more complexity in human relationships in the introduction of Sirius Black. His role within the universe and his relationship with Harry is something I look forward to seeing unfold in future books, and I particularly enjoyed the expanding magical aspects of what the students are learning at Hogwarts in this installment. The wisdom of Dumbledore continues to impress me and I like that Harry’s maturing and becoming the sort of person his parents had hoped despite their absence. All in all, I loved the growth shown in this book and look forward to seeing how it all continues...

In this one Harry finds out about Sirius Black. A man who has escaped from Azkaban prison. He is believed to have been involved with te murder of Harry's parents. During the story Harry's broomstick is destroyed but he is sent a new one (top of the line|) at Christmas but there was no note or card to know who it was from. Harry is also given a map because he was not allowed to go to town on the weekends because he did not have a permission slip. He inflated a muggle aunt just before he ran away from his muggle family. By the end Harry& Hermoine rescue Buckbeak (Hagrid's creature) and Sirius. Harry learned Sirius was not part of his parents' murder and the truth of what happened. Turns out Sirius is Harry's Godfather, he sent the broom and he granted permission for him to go to town on the weekends.
