Maddie Baker is keeping plenty of secrets from her family. Little did she know the murder of a recluse would lead to her exposure. Using the pseudonym, S. C. Fitz-Dankworthington to write fictionalized true crime stories seemed like a good choice at the time. Hiding behind the pseudonym as the author’s literary attorney helped to keep the secret. But when a man by the same name is murdered, suddenly everyone wants to meet the author. Quinn Ellery, the real Fitz-D’s neighbor manages to track Maddie down. Soon they’re up to their ears in trouble with attempted robberies and an explosion. Are Maddie’s troubles related to Quinn’s Gammie’s past?

This fast paced mystery set in the Big Easy is the perfect combination of humor and suspense. Maddie and Quinn are relatable and likable characters and their connection never feels forced. Gammie was a charming addition as well. As someone from a large family, I empathized with Maddie’s desire to keep some secrets. This was my first introduction to the Baker family and Pauline Baird Jones’s writing, but definitely won’t be my last. The bonus epilogue was a treat you don’t want to miss.
