Grace Year

The instant New York Times bestseller, Kim Liggett's The Grace Year is a speculative YA thriller in the vein of The Hunger Games and The Power, now in trade paperback.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are banished for their sixteenth year to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage.

But not all of them will make it home alive.

Tierney James dreams of a better life—but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that there’s more to fear about the grace year than the brutal elements and the poachers in the woods.

Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, Liggett's The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

This book was a compelling exploration of the dark feminine and societal projections onto women & their innate power. A dystopian nightmare of a world
that had elements of Yellowjackets. The writing was captivating & I felt so uncomfortable the whole time, like I was right there with all the girls. I could not put this book down. The ending shocked me completely. This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read.

Beautiful and captivating from start to finish! The Grace Year touches upon the dynamics between women as well as their role in society but goes beyond and examines various themes including religion and superstitions, social control, and finding one’s identity in the world. I would recommend this book a hundred times over. It’s described at a mix of The Handmaid’s Tale meets Hunger games but I would say it’s more so reminiscent in a way of Animal Farm. This read will stay with me for awhile.

I’m feeling a few different emotions after finishing this book. Happy, sad, hopeful and uneasy. This book took me by surprise, I really didn’t think it was going to be a book I’d like. But here we are, I loved it! I thought the pacing was great, the character development was good, the descriptions were amazing and the writing style was really easy to follow. The context of the book was a bit confusing at first, but as the story progresses it gets easier to piece things together. There were MANY jaw on the floor moments, like I haven’t had that many jaw on the floor moments since reading the last Stephen King book I read! The twist at the end really threw me off, I spent a solid 5 minutes going WTF, HOW?! So if that doesn’t tell you how good the writing was I don’t know what will. This was a YA novel, but I think because of the severity of the subject/plot it didn’t feel YA. It truly was a great time and I’m now looking into more books by this author! I want to go on and on about things that happened, but that would give it away. Overall, I think if you like dystopian, horror, YA, with some romance and thriller aspects, you’d LOVE this book!
