Grace Year

The instant New York Times bestseller, Kim Liggett's The Grace Year is a speculative YA thriller in the vein of The Hunger Games and The Power, now in trade paperback.

No one speaks of the grace year. It's forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are banished for their sixteenth year to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage.

But not all of them will make it home alive.

Tierney James dreams of a better life--but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that there's more to fear about the grace year than the brutal elements and the poachers in the woods.

Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, Liggett's The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

As a woman, this book has so many layers to unpack. It left me feeling seen and understood. Great read for the mental if you are willing to dive deep into the darker side of modern day life. Very well written, intellectual and passionate.

This book was a compelling exploration of the dark feminine and societal projections onto women & their innate power. A dystopian nightmare of a world
that had elements of Yellowjackets. The writing was captivating & I felt so uncomfortable the whole time, like I was right there with all the girls. I could not put this book down. The ending shocked me completely. This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read.

Enjoyed this book! Although I do think some parts felt rushed or drawn out. Overall I liked it!

*Spoilers*

I think we needed more romance building between Tierney and Ryker, it felt rushed.

Also, the ending is vague so she either could have been dreaming or she died, but I feel like she probably died in child birth?

4/5 i’m going to have to read this again at some point. after that ending I know there was so much that I missed. i think i would have rated this higher if it weren’t the first book i read after ACOSF, but unfortunately I had to start somewhere. this was exquisite and has SO many important messages in it about femininity and girlhood. if you’re into a lord of the flies meets hunger games meets handmaiden’s tale, this one’s for you.

Audiobook: I had a hard time with this book. The girls drove me crazy. The voice The girl did for Kirsten was perfect: shrill and annoying. Not my cup of tea.
