Grace Year

The instant New York Times bestseller, Kim Liggett's The Grace Year is a speculative YA thriller in the vein of The Hunger Games and The Power, now in trade paperback.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are banished for their sixteenth year to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage.

But not all of them will make it home alive.

Tierney James dreams of a better life—but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that there’s more to fear about the grace year than the brutal elements and the poachers in the woods.

Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, Liggett's The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

Fans of Margaret Atwood may like this book. It is gentler than the Handmaid series with similar themes. I wish there was a sequel. I'm going to read Kim Leggett's Blood and Salt series next.

I read this for my book club. If you like dystopian novels aimed at teenagers, then you might like this. It felt a little derivative of Hunger Games and Handmaid's Tale, both of which I liked much, much more than this book. The main character, Tierney, was difficult to like. She continuously made assumptions that weren't true....some of which were understandable, but after awhile, it just got old. Whatever she assumed later in the book, I knew would not be how it was. And the book seemed to have a focus on cruel and morbid things. Not really something I would recommend to others.
