This Japanese horror novel is actually a collection of related short stories that might be decent as stand alone mystery tales, however when put together as a collection, they are all intolerably redundant. Characters we've already met are described again and again in each chapter. The narrator repeats over and over how abnormal he is, how apathetic to people and their values, and apparently must introduce his abnormal apathy anew in each chapter. The stories have murder and torture as themes, but read more as whodunnit than horror. The writing is too flat to be scary. Each story does have a twist at the end, but by the 4th chapter, the formula is predictable and the endings are no longer surprising. I couldn't continue.
