Girl Waits with Gun (A Kopp Sisters Novel)

NATIONAL BESTSELLER. The first in the Kopps Sisters Novel Series, Girl Waits with Gun is an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation's first female deputy sheriffs.
Constance Kopp doesn't quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family -- and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.
A New York Times Editors' Choice
"A smart, romping adventure, featuring some of the most memorable and powerful female characters I've seen in print for a long time. I loved every page as I followed the Kopp sisters through a too-good-to-be-true (but mostly true!) tale of violence, courage, stubbornness, and resourcefulness."--Elizabeth Gilbert

Ok, let's be honest. I initially picked this book because of the cover. Oh, that cover! I love it!
Is this a good enough reason to choose a book? Well, let me respond with just one word - YES! Especially when you follow it up with reasoning like this: #1, I had just read The Drunken Botanist by Amy Stewart and loved it, and #2, several friends had read it and liked it. So I knew it was a safe pick.

Amy Stewart's writing is fun and smart. Her descriptions place you smack-dab in the middle of 1914 Hackensack, New Jersey. The story is captivating, yet reads quickly and the characters are believable and lovable while the bad guys are truly despicable.

Upon first appearance, you might see the Kopp sisters (Constance, Norma, and Fleurette) as stodgy spinsters. But it doesn't take long to discover these women, particularly Constance, are anything but ordinary. Standing over 6 feet tall in her flowing skirts and buttoned boots, the gun wielding Constance is not easily intimidated. In fact, it is she that easily intimidates offenders with her wit, demeanor, and of course, her size. Constance leads the way to protect and defend her family against ruthless attacks by a vengeful factory owner and his bottom-dwelling thugs. To their surprise, they are no match for the fiercely independent, bold, and unconventional Kopp women. Constance is nobody's fool. She is not one to tolerate injustice perpetrated upon her, her family, or anyone else and with her keen observation skills, she quickly proves herself to be one of the Sheriff's top assets for defeating crime.

I enjoyed the Kopp sisters immensely. They were delightful; each so different, talented, strong, and lovable in their own ways. The gradual exposure of the "family secret" to the reader was brilliant. It was unexpected but added depth and understanding to the circumstances and attitudes of the Kopp women. I got such a kick out of how they indulged the young Fleurette, with her flare for dramatics and her active imagination. "I took hold of Fleurette's shoulder, but she was effervescent by now and there was no way of stopping her." Effervescent. hehe. It describes Fleurette perfectly!
