From the World of Percy Jackson: The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure
Demigods Nico di Angelo and Will Solace must endure the terrors of Tartarus to rescue an old friend in this thrilling adventure co-written by New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan and award-winning author Mark Oshiro. Percy Jackson fans, rejoice! Nico and Will have a book of their own! As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life--literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far... Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades's realm. Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind?" Nico will have to face demons both internal and external as his relationship with Will is tested to the core in this standalone adventure featuring two of the most popular characters in the Percy Jackson saga. I give this 5 stars, even though I felt the writing was subpar compared to the other booms. However, when I consider the target audience and the purpose of the book, I like it. It's super cheesy and awkward at times, but I liked seeing Will and Nico learn to communicate and grow in the relationship since that's such a hard thing for people to do anymore. And I like that it discussed inner demons, loving people for who they are, good and bad, and realizing we all have darkness. I also like the acceptance of sexuality as well as the struggle with understanding your own. I look past some of the teenage awkwardness and messy writing for the good message.
"Even in the darkest parts of life, there was still ... light."
"Well, Father, I am a big ole queer mess."
Rick and Mark have outdone themselves, I just LOVE this book and was so sad to finish it because it meant saying goodbye to these wonderful characters.
Also tell me why I never realised this in the previous books, but I literally identify with Bob sooo much and I only realised it while reading this book bro-
Anyhow, if you're having doubts on reading this book, let this be motivation for you and READ THIS BOOK KAREN.
Also highkey loved that Paramore reference ; )
Good. I didn't enjoy it as much as Riordan's other works, but it was definitely written more to focus on a relationship rather than a demigod quest. It did a very good job with that, though. It was great to get to see more of Nico. While it was very cheesy at times, it was a cute book and worth a read if you miss Nico from the Percy Jackson saga.
