Readers say *Foundation* by Isaac Asimov is a highly influential classic that shaped science fiction, praised for its grand scope and thought-provokin...
Asimov helped shape science fiction. Period. I've read Foundation several times over my life and Hari Sheldon is among the protagonists that stand out in my memory. It's been interesting seeing what I pick out of it with each read at different points of my existence. Foundation is still a product of the 1950s, which was a different time with different social norms. That, all by itself, makes it rather fascinating. Bottom line, Foundation is hugely influential and worth a read for that reason alone. Highly recommended!
I read the Foundation series by Asimov back in middle school. The classic science fiction saga has shaped my vision of the far future of humanity and its destiny lying in the stars beyond our Solar System.
The series takes place thousands of years in the far future. Earth has become a forgotten and mythical world. Humanity has colonized millions of planets harboring quadrillions of human inhabitants across the Milky Way galaxy. A galactic empire has ruled the entire galaxy for twelve thousand years. One individual, a mathematician and social scientist on the capital world of Trantor by the name of Hari Seldon using a revolutionary field known as psychohistory envisions the imminent decline and fall of the galactic empire with a time period of thirty thousand years of barbarianism to endure before another empire arises from the ashes.
In order to influence galactic events and shorten the interregnum to a mere thousand years, Seldon ambitiously decrees the resettlement of the greatest minds within the Empire to a bleak and enigmatic world known as Terminus at the edge of the galaxy. It is this world where Seldon hopes would serve as a sanctuary for the inception of an establishment to preserve knowledge in order to initiate the salvation of human civilization. The organized plan would henceforth be declared to be known formally as the Foundation. The haven of the proposition would culminate in the development of an Encyclopedia Galactica that will become the guardian of humanity's collective insight.

A fascinating story that plays within the intersections of science and religion, humanity and history. The setting of the far distant future is almost irrelevant, for the story is about the tendencies and tribulations of mankind. It is an incredible read, beautifully written and paced despite spanning epochs and generations.
Not as good as I thought when I was 15
