I remember adding this book to my TBR pile years ago on Goodreads. I saw it for $2 on a bargain shelf and decided to pick it up. I haven’t read too many mermaid books. One, actually. Sad to say, my knowledge is based on The Little Mermaid. And in all honestly, there are a lot of legitimate comparisons too!

One of the things I love most about this one was the beautiful world building on Lily’s home. It’s underwater. Hello. The descriptions are light but detailed at the same time, painting a pretty vivid picture of this world under the sea. The ways they live and the “bonding” aspect was indeed interesting. Of course, kinda shitty at the same time because well, first kiss is for LIFE.
I liked Lily. She had this awkward but funny personality. Her obsession with Brody was kind of tiresome though and her naivety about her feelings for Quince and his for her was quite frustrating. It’s the classic “if a boy teases you it means he likes you” thing. Get a clue, girl.
Quince.. was just adorable. I felt bad for the poor guy; all he wanted was for Lily to realize his feelings and keep the bond. I felt SO bad for him towards the end.
IF you want- and I did- to dig deeper into the world, you can find small but important details missing. Or just lack of.. explanation? Or a few unrealistic (in my opinion anyway) reactions to situations. The HOW’s and WHY’s will be there. But like I said, it’s fluffy and cute. It this isn’t mean to be that kind of book.
Overall- The perfect book to read at the beach with your toes in the sand and a drink in hand. Or, like me. On the couch with some coffee, kickin books off the TBR pile. All around.CUTE.
