Fonseca is an imaginative telling of a desperate time in Penelope Fitzgerald (an acclaimed English author) life. Penelope, in an effort to save her family business and lift her growing family out of poverty, travels from London to Mexico via a transatlantic ship, trains, and long bus rides. All the while hoping that she will become an heir to her distance relative's silver mine fortune.
Instead, she finds two petty tyrants driven by their wealth and fueled by their alcoholism, callously toying with people's lives. During her three-month visit, she falls in love, betrays a friend, plays a part in a death, disappoints her young son, and compromises her family values.
On the bright side, the food and cocktails in this book will make your mouth water and conjure up visions of Mexican-themed dinner parties or just cozying up with a hot cup of champurrado and a plate of traditional Mexican cookies.
