Five Quarters of the Orange: A Historical Novel of Family Tragedy and Hidden Secrets in Wartime France (P.S.)

When Framboise Simon returns to a small village on the banks of the Loire, the locals do not recognize her as the daughter of the infamous woman they hold responsible for a tragedy during the German occupation years ago. But the past and present are inextricably entwined, particularly in a scrapbook of recipes and memories that Framboise has inherited from her mother. And soon Framboise will realize that the journal also contains the key to the tragedy that indelibly marked that summer of her ninth year. . . .

Neat setting...Rural France during World War II, but I just wasn't captivated or even too interested in any of the characters. Virtually all of them did despicable things and related to each other in cold, odd ways. The author's Chocolat was so much warmer that I was hoping for a little "feel good" in this book.
Nothing too endearing from my point of view but I'm not sorry I read it. We had a great book club discussion about this book and the characters and their motivations...maybe that's the point...it wasn't a straightforward feel-good book but one that makes you think.
