Fever (A Songbird Novel)

By Melissa Pearl

Who knew that singing in the shower could awaken her soul and lead her to the man she was meant to be with all along...

Ella: I've left the safety of my community college in Pasadena to join my boyfriend in Chicago. That's what good girlfriends do, right?

But the college here is big and daunting and my only solace is stealing a few minutes in an early morning shower so I can sing and relax. But then I hear his voice over the wall. It's deep and strong and... who knew singing a duet with a complete stranger could turn me on like this?

I want to find this man, but I shouldn't. I won't. I can't go falling for some random guy. I'm a good girlfriend. I'm loyal. So why is my heart telling me something different? Why am I obsessing over shower guy... and getting the major feels for my boyfriend's roommate, Cole, as well!

Cole: I have to find my shower songbird. She has the voice of an angel and if she'd only agreed to meet with me, I wouldn't be going out of my mind wondering who she is. I can't believe this is happening to me. I've never been interested in romance and now I'm dreaming about this mystery woman... and trying my best not to get distracted by my roommate's super hot, super sweet girlfriend, Ella, as well!

Fever is a stand alone, off-limits NA romance that comes with its own playlist. You are guaranteed a sweet and spicy love story with a happy ending. Perfect for music-loving fans of books that pack an emotional punch.

With an array of New Adult contemporary romances out there, it's become difficult to find one that is solely original and unique. Fever, is one of those books.

Although this isn't the first book I have read that has infidelity in it, it is probably one of my favorites. Of course, I don't "support" infidelity, but it's something that happens in real life - often - and it's always fascinating to me how an author with handle a situation that is so tricky. And often touchy for some. From a personal standpoint, "emotional affairs" are worse than physical. You love that person. You think about that person often. And emotions obviously run deeper than any time between the sheets do.

What I appreciated most about this situation was how there wasn't really a "bad guy." Both male characters had their issues, sure, but both were decent guys. This wasn't one of those situations where the boyfriend is this awful person. So why did I love it? Because it's so realistic. Sometimes, the person you are with turns out to be the one not perfect for you - someone else is. And I think Melissa handled the situation well. She did a great job creating the angst in the characters, and really makes you question how far you are willing to sacrifice yourself, for someone else's happiness.

Ella was a likable character, who has struggled since the death of her parents. She reminds me of one of those people who you know, but you don't KNOW. She is quiet, reserved, and is scared to be herself. Some could chalk this up to weakness, which yeah I can see it, but I think a lot of it was her insecurities. She wanted to be accepted, safe and loved. She had that with David. But it was under false pretenses. She is fiercely loyal to David, and only after a surprise was sprung on her, did she finally make a life changing decision.

So then there is Cole. It's kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what it is about Cole that I liked. He's sweet, caring and funny. But he is honorable too. I guess falling in love with your best friends girlfriend would usually knock down a few points, but he tried his damnedest to stay away from Ella and fight their attraction. They had amazing chemistry and had so much in common. Although he is confident and knows what he wants in life, I think there is a soft, vulnerable side to him too that Ella brings out.

I adored the secondary characters. Morgan and her sister, Jody. There were good to Ella, and helping her try to figure out who she is and what she wants in life. The next book in the series is Morgan's book, and I am SO looking forward to that.

I also loved how much music played a part in this book. Both characters love music, and since there is a play list associated with the book, it really gives you another perspective on the meaning of all the songs mentioned.

My Peeve -

There were parts of the book that really dragged for me. I was wanted things to move at a more brisk pace than it did. Also, I was a little disappointed about the end.

Overall -

I really enjoyed Fever. Melissa created a sweet romance with realistic elements that make you think. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, Fight For You.

Recommend -

Yes. Especially for those looking for something a little unique.
