This book should have been amazing. Loved the premise—but honestly, poorly executed. And I did not want to say that. I think this book falls apart because of the two POVs because… there’s a lot going on. We have old lovers, extensive secret pasts, family shit, political shit and then a whole new world and I never felt like I got to know either of the characters before we were switching POVs. Also, the sex scenes were spicy but it was often a “suddenly in love” situation with many pairs of people. Ugh. It had everything I love and hate in a book. Fate! Destiny! Animals choosing a magical bond! Secret bloodlines! Betrayal! Magic! History! And yet—it fell flat. It should have been like 300 pages longer and covered less ground. Sorry.
But it’s queer!
Latest book of Sara El-Arifi first of a new series. I decided to read this series before starting her more famous one! Really easy to read, good character development and although some romantasy it is well done and not overdone having quite a good plot. Really great to see fantasy book written by BIPOC and queer author with black, disabled and/or queer characters.
