End of Watch: A Novel (3) (The Bill Hodges Trilogy)

The fabulously suspenseful and "smashing" (The New York Times Book Review) final novel in the Bill Hodges trilogy from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers!

For nearly six years, in Room 217 of the Lakes Region Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, Brady Hartsfield has been in a persistent vegetative state. A complete recovery seems unlikely for the insane perpetrator of the “Mercedes Massacre,” in which eight people were killed and many more maimed for life. But behind the vacant stare, Brady is very much awake and aware, having been pumped full of experimental drugs...scheming, biding his time as he trains himself to take full advantage of the deadly new powers that allow him to wreak unimaginable havoc without ever leaving his hospital room. Brady Hartsfield is about to embark on a new reign of terror against thousands of innocents, hell-bent on taking revenge against anyone who crossed his path—with retired police detective Bill Hodges at the very top of that long list....

End of Watch by Stephen King

What’s it about?
In this last novel of the "Mr. Mercedes" trilogy, Detective Hodges and Holly Gibney continue their mission to stop Brady Hartsfield from hurting anyone else.

What did it make me think about?
All good things must come to an end.

Should I read it?
I came to Stephen King novels a little late in life. I was under the impression they were all too scary for me. I am so glad I tried his books. Stephen King can write a thriller! Of course you should read the whole trilogy.

Quote-
" 'I'm at the scene of a murder-suicide. I'd like you to come out and take a look. Bring your sidekick with you, if she's available and agreeable. I hate to say this, but I think she actually be a little smarter than you are.' "

As if Stephen King wasn't already my favorite author! This trilogy was amazing! And I adore that he didn't just make this about suicide, but he wrote an important author's note at the end about the problems our country and others in the world have around suicide. He included the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, which I now include, because there is always someone who cares: (1-800-273-TALK or 8255).

I'm glad I was late to this trilogy because I read these knowing that HOLLY was on the horizon to give me more from these characters. I would have been so sad to say goodbye if I'd read the books as they were published. Stephen King really excels at making me feel that way about his worlds and characters.

END OF WATCH ramps the pace back up and there is so much more on the line for Bill, Holly and Jerome. We see the return of the Mercedes Killer - Brady Hartsfield - and this time he intends to exact revenge on the entire city. I love the slight twist that takes this trilogy from a crime thriller to a paranormal one.

I love that we came full circle back to where - and with who - we started. The development of Holly Gibney's character over the trilogy was so endearing and special to experience. The relationship and bond she shared with Bill Hodges just makes my heart squeeze. Stephen King writes such meaningful relationships, the kinds I would love to have more of in my life.

This trilogy was an absolute treat - I devoured all three within a few weeks, which is very unusual for me as I like to space my books in a series out. I'm always scared I'll accidentally overindulge and get bored of a series if I read them back to back. If this series had more books, I'd have kept going. As it is, I'll just have to reread THE OUTSIDER to keep me happy while I wait for HOLLY to release later this year.

Brady "FRACKING" Hartsfield

Just finished book 3 and am actually sobbing!! Like real sound and tears. I truly laughed, cried, and really was wrapped up in these books.

I will say that #3 was my least favorite of the three. There is a HUGE component of this book that I didn't enjoy, but having read the previous two books in the trilogy, i felt compelled to finish what I had started and see how the trio would wrap this one up!

The series did not fail me. I'm actually sad that it's over but glad to have experienced such an entertaining read!
