BEACH BOOK OF THE SUMMER SO FAR!
What’s it about?
Curtis Sittenfled has written a modern day retelling of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"- Mr. Darcy and all. Having a strong affinity for anything Jane Austen, I was a little skeptical. Who could possibly do justice to such a classic? It is hard to write romance without being cheesy, and Ms. Austen was the master. Austen had such wit and social commentary. Who would even attempt this? I was pleasantly surprised!
What did it make me think about?
Who thinks when they are reading a good romance... you just enjoy the story and root for Liz Bennett and Mr. Darcy to realize that they are meant for each other!
Should I read it?
This is a light, fun, beach read! The first 50 pages I was still trying to keep all the characters straight, but once you figure out who is who, then the book is just delightful. Ms. Sittenfeld writes with wit and charm, and although I still say you can't beat "Pride and Prejudice"- this book is a good tribute to the original. It was also fun to see the story set in present day Cincinnati.
Quote-
"She hunched over, her elbows pressed against her thighs, her hands covering her face, and tears and mucus cascaded down as she wept and wept and wept. After an indeterminate amount of time, a tentative voice said, "Honey?" Liz looked up.
It was a slim, middle-aged black woman who also appeared to be exercising: she wore sturdy white walking shoes, shorts, and a T-shirt featuring the University of Cincinnati Bearcat. "Are you okay, honey?"
Liz ran her palm upward over her nostrils. I'm heartbroken," she said, because it seemed the most succinct way of conveying the facts.
"Oh, honey." The woman shook her head. "Aren't we all?"

I was provided an advance copy of this novel from the publisher, Random House, through Netgalley.
It only took me almost two years to finally read this, but I had no doubt that I eventually would. And I knew once I did read it, I would wonder why it had taken me so long. I love Curtis Sittenfeld's writing, and Eligible was no exception. Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite novels, and I love a good retelling! I was so happy that Sittenfeld had managed to maintain the true tone of all the characters created by Jane Austen, while successfully carrying them into the present day. Happy to finally mark this on off my tbr list!

This is a story focusing mostly on Liz. Liz despises Darcy. Darcy is a stuck-up tightwad of a man who thinks he knows everything and is above everyone... Or so it seems. A very modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice... Only contemporary and much more relatable. The LQGBT community will be quite proud. But my particular favorite isn't Mr Darcy but instead the dry wit of Mr Bennett.
