I don’t know what’s been up with me lately. I’ve been reading a lot of books, but it feels like all the books I’ve picked up have been three star reads. I’m kind of thinking I need to read this book again at some point to help sort through my thoughts.

The Chalk Man was an entertaining read and the writing was superb... I’m just not feeling satisfied by the conclusion of the mystery.

In this story I was blown away by C.J. Tudor’s ability to describe some horrific and gory scenes. I am truly impressed. Plus the very end of the book was disturbing as hell and has definitely left an impression on me.

There are some spoilers, below this point. I tried to spoiler tag them, so be cautious if you are reading this review using the app.

When it comes to the actual mystery, plot, and characters, I just personally had some issues.
Like first off, Sean. I was confused by his character. He was brash and I couldn’t totally understand his reasoning for his bullying “techniques.” (Beware spoiler) Was that C.J. Tudor’s “subtle” way to explain that Sean was gay? I caught on to Mr. Halloran’s comment regarding the rape allegation that he didn’t think Hannah was Sean’s “type.” I know that homosexuality was a taboo subject in the 80s but, forcing a kid whether you are gay or straight is just effed up. Plus that was a time where I wasn’t excited to have a very descriptive author. I’m a married straight cis female and that penis description and “smell” will haunt me for the rest of my days. Unfortunately that scene is making me trepidatious to recommend this book to *eyeroll* conservative folks...like my southern American Grandma, who loves gore and is open about sex, but god forbid there’s an LGBTQ+ character. 🤦🏻‍♀️ If in-fact Sean is gay, that’s not a flaw in my book, it’s more so about the act of the sexual assault that was despicable and triggering for me.

When it comes to the ending, frankly, I thought the murderer was somewhat obvious. I just wish the author would’ve gone about it differently. The reasoning, to me, was very lackluster. I had so much excitement and hope for this book and now I’m left feeling... indifferent and confused?
