Content warning for sexual manipulation, stalking, and related topics. I did not like this book. I kept waiting for something to happen, but I don't think it was the focus of the novel. I don't know anyone like Selin in real life, someone who is so incredibly in their head and contemplative of every single fact of life in a way that stops her in her tracks. The sexual manipulation parts were hard to read. I think this book needs a particular kind of reader, and it wasn't me.
Reading Batuman is a "love it or hate it" situation. I'm firmly in the first camp, but so far haven't converted any of my friends. Her writing could be described as confessional, but to me _obsessional_ would be the better word. Skim, the main character, views late teenage life through an unconventional lens, questioning everything we take for granted. I feel so seen!
