Don't Open the Door: A Novel (Regan Merritt Series, 2)

"Downright spectacular. A riveting page turner as prescient as it is purposeful." --Providence Journal on Tell No Lies

A family torn apart. A botched investigation. She'll stop at nothing to get answers.

US Marshal Regan Merritt never bought the FBI's theory that her ten-year-old son's murder was tied to her job. Yet as leads went cold, she'd had to walk away from the marshals, the case and her now ex-husband, Grant, who blamed her for Chase's death.

After Regan receives a chilling voice mail from her former boss, Tommy, claiming new information about Chase's murder, she can no longer stay away from her pain-filled past. Especially when Tommy's murdered before she can return his call.

Now more than ever, Regan's determined to find the truth, but the more she digs, the more evidence points to Grant as the killer's true target. But Grant isn't talking. As she tries to pin down her ex, Regan discovers something much bigger and far more sinister is at play--and she's running out of people she can trust.

Regan Merritt is back in the sequel called Don’t Open the Door. This time it is personal. Regan’s alluded tragedy in book one is revealed in Don’t Open the Door and she will stop at nothing for justice. Her life has unraveled due to the tragedy and she’s still trying to pick up the pieces. There is nothing to distract her from the disaster that her life has become like there was in book one when she helped Lucas. More death and it keeps hitting Regan close to home. She has to try to keep it together no matter how badly she wants to fall apart. Grant, her ex-husband, has been made a suspect and Regan has questions. She needs to find out in case the killer goes after him next. He sure doesn’t make things easy. Honestly, I did not care about or for Grant one bit other than he was Chase’s (Regan’s son) father. Chase is the reason Regan does anything and everything. Never underestimate the power of a mother’s love for her child. I’ll be honest though it got to the point I did not care about anyone in the story except Regan, her dad, and two victims that never stood a chance. Grant had it right when he said, “I fear I know a lot more than I should” (87%). Oh, really smart one? By the end of the book, I wish someone had killed Grant. He was playing the fool and the idiot way too well. There is naïve and then there was Grant. He got so caught up in playing the victim it was nauseating. Even if the tragedy hadn’t broken them, I would have hoped that she would have divorced him anyway. Ugh! I’m glad I got to see a more personal side of Regan to fully understand what drives her, but this book was my least favorite between the first and this one. I liked seeing her with her mind working to solve the case, not babysitting/catering to those around her. She was too soft in this one even though Grant kept saying otherwise. The best parts about this book were Regan and her dad’s relationship and the Jenna/Lance storyline. This book wasn’t my favorite, but I would still recommend it to other readers all the same.
