I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The only thing I wish I could know is the future of Ana and her family.

I found it difficult to get into the book at first but then started relating to the main character and seeing so many of the women in my family in her. As the daughter of an immigrant I felt seen.

The politics in the Dominican Republic lead to a loveless teen marriage and a big move to NYC in the 1960’s. The protagonist jumps from one dictatorship to another. This is an immigrant coming of age story. Happy endings only show up in fairy tales. Love, loss, family, becoming a woman - these are the themes explored in this novel.
