It was great hearing the inspiration behind a lot of her songs. Not your typical life story. I hope she's able to finish the musical about her life. That would be fantastic.
I love and admired Dolly Parton so much. They way she expresses herself and the depth of her consciousness is really hypnotizing. I am not a country music lover but these small passionate stories of her life and writing journeys of her songs is so simple yet impactful.
Dolly Parton’s music is not really my style and I didn’t really know much about her, but I chose to listen to this audiobook because I have an interest in songwriting, and she has always seemed like an interesting person. This is actually more like a five hour podcast/radio interview with song clips rather than a audiobook or an autobiography. It actually took me much longer than five hours to finish because I kept finding myself stopping to find various songs on YouTube.com as they were referenced. I hadn’t realized that Dolly has such a strong Christian Faith (she references this a lot), or quite the upbringing she had ("I'm a simple mountain-girl"), so it was all very enlightening. I especially enjoyed learning about her international "Imagination Library" initiative which I think is so commendable. It was fascinating to hear the stories behind the inspiration for some of her songs, although the format for this, and her answers, became a little repetitive towards the end e.g. first, play a song clip, then Dolly says how much she "loved" writing that song and/or working with that person etc. It made me smile to hear her speaking about her songs as though they all have their own personalities - e.g. "this one was misbehaving". I now feel I understand Dolly Parton a little better, but am still not sure that her style is ever going to be for me! She has certainly written many classics, though.
