Don’t pick this up if you are looking for something lighthearted with beautiful images of flowers and bubbling brooks etc. This is deep and raw, tackling some big issues such as war, inequality, feminism, tape and marriage breakdown.
It is harder to read poems that you can’t easily understand and I felt like I needed a study guide for a lot of these. Plus, being born in the UK in 1978, my cultural references for 1970s America are limited. However, I have been able to appreciate the poetry for its honesty and intimate details.
I borrowed this volume from the library after hearing a reading of the title poem, Diving Into The Wreck, at an online poetry gala. I did not initially understand all the symbolism, but I loved the poem for its feel and shape. I also enjoyed listening to Beethoven as a result of reading her theories on his ninth symphony.
My favourite poems in this collection were Diving into the Wreck, The Ninth Symphony Of Beethoven Understood at Last As A Sexual Message and August.
