Divergent

CAUTION: there are a few spoilers in this review

I am happy to say that I finally got to read Divergent after being badgered by numerous students to the point where I was fearing that they would tie me up in a chair and force me to read it all at once. Luckily, it didn't turn out like that and now I have a great new topic to talk to them about. Everyone was saying that it was one of the books that you read in one or two sittings, and now I see why. It was non-stop action all the way through! I will admit to having some trouble staying focused in the beginning, but I soon fell into the story and read the next 3/4 all in one night.

While I really liked the book as a whole, Tris is perhaps the main reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. I didn't like her for the fact that the most of the book was focused on how she only thought about winning and hated people's weaknesses. There was one particular part that stuck out to me the most: where she realized that if she wanted to become Dauntless she may have to knock out her friends, but hoping she didn't have to betray them in the process. There is no hoping in that scenario- either you betray them or you don't; and if you do, you suck as a friend and a person. I know she's trying to move past her status as Abnegation, but honestly you don't have to give up selflessness completely. I realize that characters have to be flawed, but I felt like Tris was too cruel and self-absorbed. For example, one minute she's sticking up for Al and then she's not really at all sad he's dead. Also, she gives the impression that relying on people or having any kind of sadness/fear makes you weak and you should just get over it. I felt like this part of her message was all wrong and that she was just trying to be something she's not causing her to feel fake to me. I do like her a little bit more at the end when she becomes comfortable with the fact that she's Divergent, but I still have issues with her. Let's see how I feel about her in the next book.

Where to start, where to start... First off, amazing. I was hooked instantly with this book. Admittedly I got confused at first trying to remember what all the five factions stood for, but that SO didn't matter after just a few pages.

All the characters a almost ridiculously believable and real. I've found in similar books that the men a macho, the girls damsels or something similar. But seriously, this book... wow. Deep.

The plot, amazing. Had me in tears at times and laughing at others.

I won't go on but I will say this: Read it. You won't regret it. In fact, I almost guarantee that you'll be hooked, just like me xD

I read the Hunger Games. I started to roll my eyes thinking, here's another knock off. It deals with Beatrice. She renames herself tris. She meets Four. Cue the music and throw in another potential lover into the mix.... Right? Totally wrong. Much to my delight, I was way off base. Tris is a Divergent. She can encompass many different traits if the regions and know how to nit let the simulator make her mind and spirit broken.

In a futuristic world, nothing and NOBODY is exactly who they seem. Now ask yourself, if you can trust your parents, friends, leaders, who can you trust?

Next book.....

In the future there is a place made up of five factions. When the citizens turn sixteen they choose which factions to join. The story is what happens to Beatrice after she made that choice.

This book was fast paced and engaging. I will admit I liked Four better than any other character. He was one of the few people in the book who I believed had a back story.

I did find it sad that the people in the book who caused most of the mischief belonged to the faction which appealed the most to me.
