Devoted

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

From Dean Koontz, the master of suspense, comes an epic thriller about a terrifying killer and the singular compassion it will take to defeat him.

"Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic." --Associated Press

Woody Bookman hasn't spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father's death and now threatens him and his mother. And he's not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

A uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed, Kipp is devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it's too late.

Woody's fearful suspicions are taking shape. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he's coming after Woody and his mother. The reasons are primal. His powers are growing. And he's not alone. Only a force greater than evil can stop what's coming next.

I did not enjoy this one. I was pleasantly surprised that dogs ran throughout the story line and it was probably my favorite part of the book but I felt like the ending was weak. In addition, there were many parts I skimmed because it was all just descriptive words that highlighted the power of nature and the parts of our lives we can't see with the physical eye but it was dry and there was too much of it. I found myself rushing through the book to just be done with it because i'm not one to stop reading in the middle.....and then the plot lines ended rather abruptly. The main bad guy just dies without fanfare and separate from the other main characters who are huddled together in a house. The way they handled the 4 murder for hire guys when they arrived at the Bookman house was odd (although YAY dogs). Definitely not my favorite Koontz book.

So this was the first Dean Koontz book I have ever read or listened to. That said I am a big fan of books that incorporate dogs and are about dogs, as I am a big fan of dogs and have had and have many dogs in my life.
This book felt a little too cookie cutter for me. The characters all seemed a little too cliche in many ways and weren't as well developed - with the exception of Kip, the dog. There are a supernatural aspect to the story with the dogs and the "wire" which I found to be more believable than some of the other things in the book, which I won't mention since I don't want to give anything away.
It's a light sort of book, so if you are interested in something like that it's entertaining enough, particularly if you are a fan of dogs; but not necessarily Dean Koontz's other books, as I have seen from other reviews, his fans were disappointed in this book.

I generally like most books by Koontz, both because of his style and that he puts golden retrievers dead center into the storyline! This book I didn't like at all for several reasons (even giving it away when I don't do that with books, generally): (1) the repetition of descriptions of women and children and animal hating ideations and actions by several characters were seriously oppressive and almost sadistic to the reader, (2) the story line seemed a compilation of other stories both he and King have written, and (3) the descriptions of the action were drawn out and frustrating. I am an Odd-Thomas fan (ALL of those books) and Koontz has definitely done better.
