Den of Vipers

Ryder, Garrett, Kenzo, and Diesel-The Vipers.

They run this town and everyone in it. Their deals are as sordid as their business, and their reputation is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, forcing him to beg for mercy. They are not people you mess with, yet my dad did. The old man ran up a debt with them and then sold me to cover his losses.

Yes, sold me.

They own me now.

I'm theirs in every sense of the word. But I've never been meek and compliant. These men, they look at me with longing. Their scarred, blood-stained hands holding me tight. They want everything I am, everything I have to give, and won't stop until they get just that. They can own my body, but they will never have my heart.

The Vipers? I'm going to make them regret the day they took me.

This girl? She bites too.

Lots of triggers and I felt this could have been two books instead of one, but it still had me enthralled with some super spicy “why choose” RH moments. Bad a** FMC which I love.

Dark but passionate

I didn't think I would ever fall in love with criminals who are literally unleashed in their power. But this book took me to a whole new level. The characters are so raw and real. The violence is dark and captivating. This book is one of my favorites now and I only wish I could go back and read it again for the first time.

A well-written, fun, thrilling dark RH! But I’m concerned about the POC representation

This is my first KA Knight book, and I came across it because it’s consistently recommended in one of my facebook groups. It’s captivating and the author’s storytelling is powerful. The characters are strong and really well defined. The steamy bits of the book are super hot (and not always for the faint of heart, so be warned and check if there are content warnings or trigger warnings because I didn’t double check.) But there’s one thing that bothered me and it’s that the ‘bad guys’ of the book were the only persons of colour in the entire story.

They are described only as Asian, so no specific Asian group is isolated, however, you can piece it together as you go through because in one scene, retribution is carried out in the antagonists’ home country of China. I found it unsettling that almost no one else in the book is described with any other racial identifiers and that there wasn’t any identifiably ‘good’ characters that were specifically identified as POCs.

I’ve just torn through this book in the last 3 days because I was really engrossed in the storytelling, and the only other POC representation I recall being specified is a ‘Chinese woman’ who works in the gambling hall. She was only briefly mentioned and this appears to be the only ‘neutral’ or not-bad character of Asian description mentioned, but even within this setting, I feel this falls to a bit of a stereotype. I should mention I myself am Asian, so maybe this is all a bit of a sensitive spot for me, but I just didn’t think these details were necessary to the whole of the story - especially when they are they only racial group mentioned at all - as bringing it up makes this one glaringly bright area wherein I thought the author could have done better and been more mindful of representing people of color.

Finally, there is also mention that members/associates/family of the bad guys are illegals so the heroes, as part part of their retribution plan, have them deported. Combined with the other details given, it makes me concerned that the bad guys are portrayed as illegal Asian immigrants… it’s just overall a really uncomfortable representation especially when considering literally NO OTHER CHARACTER in the book is racially identified. And considering this book has some graphic depictions of rough sexual interactions, this representation is the thing that made me uncomfortable. So, despite the fact that I would love to give this book a 5* review, it’s this potentially harmful/painful representation (with no good counter-representation or a good reason for the bad guys to be described as such) that prevents me from doing so.

Aside from this, it’s still a really good story, but I thought I ought to mention it for any others that might find this aspect uncomfortable.

I had to take a break because it felt like this just went on and on forever. It did pick up and had a little more action than just smut at about 70%. I’m not complaining about the smut—it was, indeed, very smutty. Every character in this story is messed TF up, and I enjoyed learning a little more about each of them. The audio, though? HYSTERICAL. Diesel, especially

I almost DNFed bc it did have a plot peak but then it was very repetitive after and could have ended like one hundred pages earlier
