Deja Dead: 10th Anniversary Edition (1) (A Temperance Brennan Novel)

From the New York Times bestselling author of Speaking in Bones, the first Temperance Brennan novel in the “cleverly plotted and expertly maintained series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Her life is devoted to justice—even for those she never knew.

In the year since Temperance Brennan left behind a shaky marriage in North Carolina, work has often preempted her weekend plans to explore Quebec. When a female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in trash bags, Temperance detects an alarming pattern—and she plunges into a harrowing search for a killer. But her investigation is about to place those closest to her—her best friend and her own daughter—in mortal danger…

“A genius at building suspense” (Daily News, New York), Kathy Reichs’s Temperance Brennan books are ripe with intricate settings and memorable characters” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

I used to read these books in high school, but since I finished my Bones rewatch earlier this year, I figured I would start rereading this series (which I don't think I ever finished anyway). Though really, the books and the show are pretty much two completely different things with different characters and everything. As everyone has noted, the main character has nothing in common with the TV show character other than sharing a name and a profession. I knew that going in though, so that was fine and it didn't derail my reading experience. In my head, it's just two completely different works of fiction anyway.

I really liked the mystery going on here. The darker the better for me, and this was plenty dark, with mutilated bodies and sexual sadism and all that. I was actually surprised when Brennan's friend was murdered. I didn't think they were going to go there. For such a big event though, I still feel like there wasn't enough fallout from it. I don't know, I wish there had been more...something.

My main issue with the book was actually the writing itself. There were so many similes that it was distracting from the story. Everything was "like" something else, and most of those similes were just unnecessary. Also, the internal monologging was kind of annoying. When it's done right and well, then it can be effective, but not when it's constant over the book. I think this was one of her first books though, so maybe the writing itself gets better in subsequent novels.

(Also, since I'm reading a story set in 1994 in 2020, I kept being like "why can't she just use her cell phone...oh wait" LOL.)

I enjoyed this one! I've been rewatching the series Bones but haven't read any of the books. The series is definitely different than the book but I still enjoyed it. I would definitely love to read more in the series!
