Death on the Nile: A Hercule Poirot Mystery: The Official Authorized Edition (Hercule Poirot Mysteries, 17)

"A top-notch literary brainteaser." -New York Times

Soon to be a major motion picture sequel to Murder on the Orient Express with a screenplay by Michael Green, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh alongside Gal Gadot--coming Feb 11, 2022!

Beloved detective Hercule Poirot embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of Agatha Christie's most famous mysteries.

The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life.

Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: "I'd like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger." Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

A sweeping mystery of love, jealousy, and betrayal, Death on the Nile is one of Christie's most legendary and timeless works.

"Death on the Nile is perfect." --The Guardian

This was my first Agatha Christie read! The character introduction was slow for me, but once the characters all boarded the Karnak, the story really took off! I did enjoy the detail brought to each of the characters. About halfway through the book, I predicted how it would end. However, I did find myself not being able to put it down in order to find out who carried out the murder and if my prediction was true. Overall, this is a very fast read that will keep you on your toes.

Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile was first published in 1938 in the United States. I read the edition, which was published in 2011. According to the “Author’s Note,” Christie wrote that she based the steamer on a steamer she took from Assam to Wadi Halfa on the Nile River in Egypt. I can see why Death on the Nile is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous mysteries. The murder mystery in Death on the Nile is very intricate, and the novel is set in an exotic location for British readers in the 1930s. I think the reader should remember that the book was written for British audiences in the 1930s. At the novel's beginning, Hercule Poirot is between mystery cases and going to take a trip in winter in Egypt. Poirot is interested in the Egyptian climate (Christie 14). Christie is a writer that a reader can easily imagine their work turned into a film. I feel like Death on the Nile is one of Christie's most film-friendly stories. The writing is fast-paced, and there is a lot of dialogue. When these factors could be combined with the background of the Nile River and Ancient Egyptian sites, I can see why filmmakers such as Kenneth Branagh, John Guillerman, Andy Wilson, and others are drawn to this novel. I enjoyed reading Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile.

The scenario of Egypt certainly lends a great background to this mystery.

I think this is a case of: it's not you, Ms. Christie, it's me. This book just did not vibe with me.
