Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The award-winning author of We Should All Be Feminists and Americanah gives us this powerful statement about feminism today—written as a letter to a friend.
A few years ago, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received a letter from a childhood friend, a new mother who wanted to know how to raise her baby girl to be a feminist. Dear Ijeawele is Adichie’s letter of response: fifteen invaluable suggestions—direct, wryly funny, and perceptive—for how to empower a daughter to become a strong, independent woman. Filled with compassionate guidance and advice, it gets right to the heart of sexual politics in the twenty-first century, and starts a new and urgently needed conversation about what it really means to be a woman today.

My January book read is complete, and I feel such a deep sense of satisfaction from its powerful insights. A heartfelt thank you to friend @sarahjayhobson for recommending this gem! It’s a charming, quick read that I know I’ll cherish and revisit often for guidance. I also want to give a warm shoutout to the amazing author, @chimamanda_adichie ✨|
Have you ever read something that resonated with you so much you thought, “that’s exactly what I was trying to say!”? That’s how I felt about this book.
As I mentioned before, I’m excited to share more in-depth reviews through my blog when my website launches for Freely Soul (@FreelySoul.byOlivia). In the meantime, here’s a little preview:
I’ve always grappled with the concept of “gender roles.” Many of us were raised with the idea that women are subordinate to men, that they somehow fit better into that narrative. I, too, once subscribed to this belief. However, life experiences opened my eyes to the incredible strength and contributions of women. (Yes, I’m a bit biased, but I strive to remain grounded, recognizing that together, we are truly unstoppable.)
Through my journey with this book and my marriage, I’ve realized the importance of discussing each other’s “responsibilities” rather than rigidly adhering to assigned “roles.” I look forward to diving deeper into this in my actual blog post. This book is filled with so many gems of wisdom and takeaways!
I really enjoyed this book!
Another MUST-TO-READ book for anybody interested or even confused around the term and movement such as feminism. This book was mind-blowing and it opened a totally new world to me.
I enjoyed this read as it was short and straightforward
