Dark Matter: A Novel

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Imagine you wake up one day and your wife is no longer your wife. Your son is no longer your son. You are living in a different world fighting to get back to your own. That’s what this book is about and I couldn’t put it down!

April’s Bookclub read was Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. In this mindbending thriller, Jason Dessen, a seemingly normal, slightly boring, family man is kidnapped on his way home. “Are you happy with your life?” The last question he hears before waking up strapped to a gurney surrounded by people in hazmat suits welcoming him back. The family he loves doesn’t exist and these doctors have a lot of questions for celebrated genius Jason. This book ...read more

This was definitely a huge mindfuck of a book. Like...sheesh, I don't even know what to say about it to do it justice, tbh. I went from page 70 to the end of the book tonight because I couldn't put it down after I got into it. The idea is pretty normal - the idea of parallel universes and all - but the way it was done and the twist once Jason manages to find his own world again? That was unexpected and thoroughly original, and I really ...read more

As a lover of science and physics, I enjoyed this book. The author was creative and imaginative in his interpretation of traveling in a multiverse, while making the reader question one’s own feelings if caught in a similar crisis.

I genuinely enjoyed this take on parallel universes. I felt like there was a complete exploration of both the drawbacks and wonder. It was interesting, had great pacing and kept me engaged. Worth the hype..
