⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ The second book only trumps the first because of the attachment and investment I have now developed for Celaena’s vendetta, Dorian’s succession as ruler, and the humor strung throughout the second installment of ToG.
I knew that she would be revealed as the ‘lost’ heir to the fallen court of Terresan, and I love the new layer that has been added as result: a royal princess turned assassin turned weapon who is ALSO fae and wields magic whose destiny is to face her past and fulfill this destiny yet to be revealed.
There are a lot (A LOT) of details to understand and keep track of, since new details are being shared every chapter. What is the significance of the date she shared with Chaol? How does Dorian have powers? What is the king of Ardalan making and why and how? So many things.
I am still hit and miss with Chaol, who reminds me a lot of the childhood friend of Violet’s from Fourth Wing whom had the same shortcomings of being TOO dedicated to his job and the structure of rules…but Chaol has his own battles and seems to be working against those, despite his nature, in favor of Celaena, which is something flat out not seen with the similar relationship dynamics in Fourth Wing.
Dorian’s issues add a whole new layer of complexity and adventure so there’s a new sense of depth in the storyline outside of just Celaena’s lost heritage.

I still have a hard time imagining the main character as a teenager, given the training and experiences she's had and how quick she is to rise to a "battle rage" pitch. But other than that, I'm enjoying this small detour (from my usual fare) into more traditional fantasy, but with some seriously strong female characters.
