"Remarkably Bright Creatures [is] an ultimately feel-good but deceptively sensitive debut. . . . Memorable and tender." -- Washington Post

For fans of A Man Called Ove, a luminous debut novel about a widow's unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus reluctantly residing at the local aquarium--and the truths she finally uncovers about her son's disappearance 30 years ago.

After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late.

Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

This book is a must read for everyone. I cannot say enough good things. I loved the way this story is laid out and how we are introduced to all of our characters. Not only is the plot creative but it’s filled with emotion. I was attached to all of the characters and am genuinely sad I’m done reading this one. It’s hard to express what makes this so good without spoilers so the best I can do is say, you really need to read this one!

I absolutely loved this book. The end kind of fizzled out for me, but otherwise I loved gaining insight from the various chsracters perspectives.

So far this is my feel good book of 2022. What’s not to enjoy? Who would of thought an older widow and an octopus could keep you so entertained?

This was an amazing story of aging and unlikely friendship! The author writes beautifully with a prose that is lyrical yet grounded. I loved how the story was written in different perspectives. What makes this story so heartwarming is that its a gentle reminder that healing from grief often comes through unexpected friendships and kindness.
