The book's premise was good and the historical context is accurate; but, in the end the story is predictable and flat. Not a fan.
I felt like I was standing around a men's locker room with prepubescent boys fascinated with sex and poor advice on girls. And then a war skirmish every now and then. A reader could simply read the opening premise of eggs and the last chapter and there is the story-everything in between was wasted words and not relevant to the plot.
And this is not a YA book. Not at all.

This was was a captivating WWII story that followed two Russians on an life or death expedition for a dozen eggs behind enemy lines. Short and sweet, really enjoyed the flow of this story. The characters were witty and kept a light hearted tone despite circumstances.

There was nothing about this book that I couldn't love; the main characters, the plot, the pace, the writing -- it was all fantastic. I was hooked from the first sentence. I think what stands out most to me is the writing, because I was so unaware that I was reading. The words flow effortlessly. They are smooth and descriptive. I was not reading so much as I was mentally seeing the story play out like a movie. I could see, hear, and feel the emotions, events, environment, and the characters. David Benioff is an amazing writer and storyteller. I look forward to reading more from this author.
