There is no cozier setting than a cookie bakery/cafe! Hannah has youth, a good education, a successful business, close family living nearby, her own condo, a dream job, an adorable cat, a couple of interested available guys, and a fun new hobby--helping solve murders in her otherwise idyllic small Minnesota town! Reading this book is seriously enjoyable escapism!!!
Small-town baker Hannah Swensen stumbles into sleuthing when a beloved delivery driver is found dead behind her cookie shop. Determined to clear her name and protect her business, Hannah teams up with her quirky community and occasionally butts heads with the new detective in town. As clues rise to the surface, so do family secrets, jealousies, and hidden motives. With a killer still on the loose, Hannah must piece together the truth before someone else gets burned.
I purchased this book bc it was a special edition with cookie sprayed edges and as a baker I thought it was too cute to pass up. Buying the book meant I actually had to read it so here we are. This isn't a thriller but more cozy mystery and while I initially tried to read it, I couldn't get into it. So I ended up listening to it on audio and it was a better experience.
I loved the baking aspect behind this book: the references and mentions of cookies, the fact the main character is a cookie baker with a cookie bakery, and that nearly every chapter concludes with a cookie recipe.
This was definitely different than my usual read but I loved the change of pace. I may or may not continue reading (listening?) to the rest of the books but there's sooooo many so we will see.

I read this book years ago on recommendation from my dentist’s wife. It is light reading. I recommended Diane Mott Davidson to her.
I wanted to re-read because the last 3 books in the series seem “off” in my opinion. I wanted to see if the writing has changed. Yes, it has.
This is the first book in the series. The dairy delivery driver is killed down the alley from the cookie shop with a bag of chocolate chip cookies next to him. This gives the title of the book.
We get to meet the new suitors in Hannah’s life. The town dentist moves back to help his mom and take over his dead father’s practice. Norman is also a photographer.
Mike is the newly hired detective. The worry is that Bill, Hannah’s brother in law, might not get the promotion to detective he wants.
Delores is concerned that as Hannah is close to thirty she is not going to marry.
I like the series because of the good recipes. I won not only a first place blue ribbon but also Best if Division at the county fair for bar cookies from Devil Foods Cake Murder!
