Chasing Shadows: A World War 2 (WW2) Historical Christian Fiction Romance Novel Set in the Netherlands

For fans of bestselling WWII historical fiction comes a powerful novel from Lynn Austin about three women whose lives are instantly changed when the Nazis invade the neutral Netherlands, forcing each into a complicated dance of choice and consequence.

Lena is a wife and mother who farms alongside her husband in the tranquil countryside. Her faith has always been her compass, but can she remain steadfast when the questions grow increasingly complex and the answers could mean the difference between life and death?

Lena's daughter Ans has recently moved to the bustling city of Leiden, filled with romantic notions of a new job and a young Dutch police officer. But when she is drawn into Resistance work, her idealism collides with the dangerous reality that comes with fighting the enemy.

Miriam is a young Jewish violinist who immigrated for the safety she thought Holland would offer. She finds love in her new country, but as her family settles in Leiden, the events that follow will test them in ways she could never have imagined.

The Nazi invasion propels these women onto paths that cross in unexpected, sometimes-heartbreaking ways. Yet the story that unfolds illuminates the surprising endurance of the human spirit and the power of faith and love to carry us through.

This book captured my heart immediately as a mom going through her firstborn graduating high school and figuring out his place in the world. Lynn Austin has a way of making her characters so relatable that you can see them, hear their voices and connect them with someone you know. By chapter 10, I was hooked and could not read this book quickly enough. Three strong women riding bikes, arranging meetings, working the underground newspaper and saving lives in The Netherlands during World War II. I could visualize the farm where Ans grew up. I could see the townhouse where she lived with the professor and Eloise. Oh Eloise. She is so easy to love and she suffers from what we would label today as PTSD or possibly bipolar disorder. The story line is fantastic, but it is the personalities and imperfections that make this story come to life. The battles with anger, injustice, love and figuring out what love really is. There is so much real world wisdom to be gained from this book. For that reason, I hope more people will read it. I appreciate that the author seems to know just how much suspense my heart can take before she provides relief. I absolutely love this book and the education it imparts of this place and this point in history. It also reminded me that the current days are not as dark as they could be. This book led me to my knees in prayer wrestling with God regarding the darkness that does exist in this world, but Chasing Shadows also provides many real world applications of how to chase the shadows in our own lives.
