“It was a familiar feeling, and I knew the signs of my next great obsession brewing. Once I got it in my head that I was going to do something, there was quite literally nothing on the planet that could stop me, not even myself.”

This describes Finn in a nutshell. This is what brought him to the Stars Cove to surf Leviathans, and it’s what caused him to refuse to give up on Riddick.

This book sucked me in from the first chapter. Finn is a fun surfer dude, him and Turtle both, and their friendship is so relatable. They definitely remind me of the surfer dudes I grew up with. Finn’s inner dialogue is so charming, and it matches his personality because he is definitely a charmer. Riddick wasn’t really falling for his charm in the beginning, though and that left him endearingly confused at times. Of course, Riddick eventually gave in because, just as Finn warned us, he would not stop once he decided that he wanted something and he absolutely wanted Riddick.

The imagery was great, making me totally able to close my eyes and see the whole scene, from the pastel colors of the surf shops to Sharkies to the little beach shack Finn bought for himself. You can almost feel the salty sea spray, hear the waves crashing and smell the ocean.

This is my very first time reading a book by Alexandria St. Pierre, and I was so totally impressed not just by the story, but also by the characters and the writing as well.

The characters are fully fleshed out, the story line is seamless, and the pacing is perfect. Nothing felt rushed, nor did it drag out, and the foreshadowing was spot on. Allusions to Riddick’s secret kept me from putting this book down until I found out everything.

I would hesitate to call this an HEA, at least not in the traditional sense of the term, but our two MMCs do wind up together in the end. It is a tough look at grief, which is also very well done.

This book has shot to the top of my favorite reads of the year, and I am not sure anything else will top it. I am absolutely going to be checking out this author’s backlist.
