Catacomb (Asylum, 3)

The heart-stopping third book in the New York Times bestselling Asylum series follows three teens as they take a senior-year road trip to one of America's most haunted cities, uncovering dangerous secrets from their past along the way. With all the thrills, chills, and eerie found photographs that led Publishers Weekly to call Asylum "a strong YA debut," Catacomb is perfect for fans for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Sometimes the past is better off buried.

Senior year is finally over. After all they've been through, Dan, Abby, and Jordan are excited to take one last road trip together, and they're just not going to think about what will happen when the summer ends. But on their way to visit Jordan's uncle in New Orleans, the three friends notice that they're being followed . . . and photographed. Then Dan starts receiving messages from someone he didn't expect to hear from again—someone who died last Halloween.

When the trio arrives in New Orleans and the strange occurrences only escalate, Dan is forced to accept that everything that has happened to him in the past year may not be a coincidence but fate—a fate that ties Dan to a group called the Bone Artists, who have a sinister fascination with notorious killers of the past.

Now Dan's only hope is that he will make it out of his senior trip alive.

Each book of this series seemed to get better and better. While I still didn't have much of a scare, the suspensefulness was somewhat there and there were a couple twists I wasn't quite expecting while I figured others out fairly quickly. It is definitely worth the read if you enjoyed the previous two books!

Weirdest thing. It took me like three months to get Sanctume from the library but when I went to search for Catacomb I got to borrow it right away. And then the Kindle book said it would take me 4 hours and 9 minutes to read and I was like, "Mwahaha, I can beat that!" (with a respectable if not wildly impressive time of 2 hrs and 3o min.). I didn't like this one as well as the first two because it wasn't really connected to the first two except that Dan was looking for his family. Instead, it got all up in New Orleans and voodoo stuff and beignets. Which made me really hungry for beignets. Which is annoying because I literally couldn't be further from a good beignet. Huff. Anyhow, the plot was clearer, which was a nice turn of events, and it resolved a whole lot more cleanly than the other two, and I did enjoy it. I don't know, I just feel like it was out of place with the first two. Like it should have been unconnected with them at all. Hmmm. I wonder if there's a next one. It feels finished, even if it did feel unconnected. I guess I'll go find out!

It was fun, but I like the first two better.
